Session 4

The Apostles Creed Study

1.      who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

30 Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 "And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. 32 "He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 "And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end." 34 Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?" 35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” (Luke 1:30-35 NKJV)

It seems so strange to us.  It seems almost wrong.  God sets up that a man and woman are to come together in marriage so that they can become the Image of God (Imago Deo) and “create” a new life together and a new life in a new person.   And at the most important birth in history God deviates.  Why?

It really is very simple; Jesus had to be fully human through Mary and fully God through the Holy Spirit.  Jesus had to be human to reign on the throne of King David and be the promised seed God’s people had long been waiting for who would be struck by the serpent (satan) and would step on the head of the serpent.

To be the Holy and pure sacrifice Jesus had to be able to be tempted by sin but not sin which is impossible for someone who is only human or only God.  So Jesus was able to conquer sin in His life so He could pay for our sin by offering His life as a holy sacrifice for us!

So often the Bible uses terms we do not understand, what does conceive mean?

Where in the Bible does it say that the Seed of the woman would step on the head of satan?

Why was a “holy sacrifice” needed for us?

Is Jesus becoming 100% man and 100% God something permanent?

Why do you think this is true?
